オフィスチェアと呼ばれる形式に、いつも違和感を持っていました。 それらは極端に言えば、オフィスという特定の空間を想定し、長時間のデスクワークをいかに機能的にサポートするか？という一点のみに集中して開発されてきたように感じるからです。
そうしたチェアは、どうしてもメカニカルになり、家具というより器具的な様相を帯びてきます。 身体を工学的に捉えることは、道具としての側面の重要な要素のひとつですが、チェアを“共に長い時間を過ごす”パートナーだとすれば、その素材感や空間性を含めたもっと他のありようがあっても良いのではないかと考えていました。
ELMAR（エルマー）の構成方法は、極めてプリミティブです。 複雑な機構を伴うメカニカルなものではなく、チェアを構成する各素材の特性を最大限に活かしていくことに集中しました。 具体的には、座のシェルと背もたれは成形合板、座面はメッシュ張り、背もたれとシェルを繋ぐ部分は樹脂パーツ、支える構造体をスチールパイプ、そして脚パーツは無垢の木材で成り立っています。 これにより、身体の預け方に応じて、素材がねじれ、たわみながら快適に受けとめるしなやかなチェアを実現しました。
言い換えれば、歴史的にオフィスチェアが培ってきたクラシカルな構成方法を踏襲しながら、より現代的な新しいチェアに進化させることを試みました。 ゆえに、その佇まいは、ワーキングチェアとしての機能性を有しながら、例えばダイニングチェアと並べても違和感のない、まさに“器具ではなく家具”としての表情が生まれています。
ELMARは、その家具としての表情によって多様な空間に入っていくことが可能です。 オフィスとダイニングの間をフレキシブルに行き来できること。 それは、働くという行為を、より自由にすることに繋がっていくと信じています。

I have never felt comfortable with the formality of what we call an office chair. In extremis, they seem to have been developed under the single focus of supporting postures when working at a desk for a long time in a specific space as an office. Such a chair becomes inevitably mechanical, and takes an equipment-like aspect rather than a furniture-like one. To develop equipment, it is important to understand the human body ergonomically; but to develop a chair as a partner with whom we “spend a long time together”, there can be other aspects to include- not only an ergonomic aspect but also texture and spatiality.
The structure of the ELMAR chair is ultimately primitive. I focus on maximizing the advantages of each material which makes up the chair, rather than mechanical matters with complicated structures. Specifically, the seat shell and backrest are made of molded plywood, the seat surface is upholstered with mesh, the connecting parts for the backrest and shell are resin, the supporting structure is made of steel pipe, and the legs are solid wood. This enables a flexible chair to nestle the human body comfortably according to sitting posture, by twisting and bending materials.
In other words, I tried to evolve this chair to be a new, more modern chair while following the classical construction method that office chairs have historically cultivated. Therefore, while it keeps the appropriate functionality of an office chair, it has the appearance of “furniture rather than equipment'', and would not look out of place next to a dining chair, for example.
ELMAR can fit various spaces with its furniture expression. I believe that the ability to move flexibly between the office and the dining room will lead to greater freedom in the act of working.

ELMARチェアは、特別な機構や複雑な構造を持たずに、背もたれとシート部をつなぐ樹脂パーツのわずかな変形と、合板自体のたわみで上体を優しく受け止めることによって、着座時の快適性を実現しています。 肘掛けには木を使用することで心地よい質感を直接肌で感じることができます。
Without specific functions or a complicated structure, the ELMAR chair instead gently supports the user with a slight deformation of the plastic joint parts connecting its back and seat, and the flexibility of plywood itself. The wooden armrest directly conveys its comfortable texture to the skin.
座面には、アウトドア用の家具にも使われる、耐久性が高く柔軟性のあるメッシュ材を使用し、柔らかで快適な着座感を実現しています。 パッドタイプはメッシュ材の上に、さらにクッション性のあるシートを装着しているので、長時間でも快適にお座りいただけます。 また、メッシュ材は軽快さを演出するとともにチェアの軽量化も実現しています。
To realize soft and comfort seating, its seat is upholstered with a durable and soft mesh fabric which is also used on outdoor furniture. The padding type has a cushioning pad above the mesh fabric, providing long-term comfortable seating. The mesh fabric also creates a lightweight feel and reduces the chair's weight.

天板から脚が少し張り出した意匠により、テーブルを並べた際、前後左右に自然にスリットが生まれ、そのスペースを利用した配線や、コンセントユニット、パーテションの取り付けができます。 また、配線は天板裏と脚にある溝を利用してスマートに隠すことができます。
オフィスで働くためのサイズや機能を備えながら、くつろいだり、楽しんだり、和んだりできるダイニングのような心地よさが感じられるデザインです。
The ELMAR collection has a working table matching the chair.
When aligning multiple units, the legs protruding beyond the tabletop area leave narrow slits between tables on four sides. Utilizing the slits secures space for wires, power outlets, and partitions. Wiring can be managed by using the slots at back of the tabletop and in the legs.

The chairs are mainly made of beech, and are available in two colors: a clear natural finish, and a black finish that preserves the wood grain.
Seats are available in a light mesh type or a more comfortable padding type with back and seat support. The chair can be with or without armrests.
The tables support various work scenaria, such as making workstations by arranging small-sized tables and utilizing big sizes for multiple purposes.
It also has basic functions such as a desktop panel, power outlets, and wiring.

ELMARシリーズのテーブルは、主に国産広葉樹のナラ材を使用しています。 天板は、短尺材や端材などをフィンガージョイントでつないで集成したものを芯材にし、表裏面に巾ハギ材を積層したものを用いています。 こうすることで、 家具づくりに不向きな短尺材や端材などの未利用材を有効活用しながら、無垢材の量感と、幅ハギ材の質感を感じることができます。 未利用材の有効活用は、人の手が入った森の適切な管理につながり、森の多様性を維持することができ、私たちは豊かな恩恵を受けながら、森と共存していくことができると考えています。
The table from the ELMAR collection is mainly made of oak, a Japanese hardwood. The core of the tabletop is crafted with wood which laminates finger-jointed short timbers and their offcuts. The upper and lower of the tabletop are covered with solid laminated wood glued together habahagi style. This way of manufacturing takes full advantage of the timber’s massiveness and lamination technique feel while optimizing unused wood materials such as short timbers and offcuts which are not usually suitable for furniture making. This reduces waste and contributes to the effective management of forests while maintaining biodiversity. We believe we can coexist with the forest while reaping its rich benefits.
今回のELMARを生み出すまでには、新しい挑戦がいくつもありました。 人々の生き方、働き方が大きく変わる時代に、オフィス家具にはどんな価値が必要で、どの様な姿が相応しいのか。 それは、遡れば20年程前から藤森泰司アトリエと内田洋行で一緒に考えてきたテーマでした。
これまでにもいくつもの家具を一緒に作り上げてきましたが、ワークチェアについては、今までと違った価値を持ったチェアを商品化することが難しいジャンルでした。 しかしながら近年、働くことに対する柔軟な変化を背景にして、「器具から家具へ」～働くという行為をより自由にする～ というコンセプトを持った新しいワークチェアを商品化することができました。
今回の商品において、そのコンセプトにふさわしい素材を考えた時、より家具らしさを求めるならば木材の使用は必然の選択となりました。 そこで私たちは木材を適切に管理しながら、高い木工技術を持ち、新しいことに柔軟に真摯に対応することのできる「カリモク家具」と手を組み、それぞれの知見を重ねることで商品化を目指しました。
そうして生まれた、ELMARシリーズは、人々の暮らしの一部である「働く」という時間と場を、木の魅力を十分に感じながら、豊かで快適に支えることができると考えます。

Three-part harmony: TAIJI FUJIMORI ATELIER, Karimoku Furniture, and UCHIDA YOKOThere were many new challenges in making this ELMAR collection. What value and what style are needed for office furniture in the period when people are radically changing how they live and work? This is the theme that TAIJI FUJIMORI ATELIER and UCHIDA YOKO have worked together these 20 years. We have worked on various projects to make furniture together, but this office chair was the most difficult field to commercialize with very different value from conventional ones. However, against the background of transition to the flexible working style, we have boosted the commercialization of a new working chair with the concept “From equipment to furniture Liberating the act of working”.
Considering the appropriate material for the product’s concept, wood is the inevitable choice for a more furniture-like characteristics. Teaming up with Karimoku Furniture, with their advanced carpentry technology and forest management, and ability to respond flexibly to new challenges, we combine knowledge and experiences from both sides to commercialize the office chair. We believe that the ELMAR collection can support the time ∧ place of “working”, that is a part of people’s lives, with the beauty of wood richly and comfortably.
